Gateway to Lake Corpus Christi

Listings in Mathis, TX

Welcome to Mathis, a San Patricio County town beside Lake Corpus Christi, a sprawling Nueces River reservoir that anchors recreation across South Texas.

Mathis is a city in western San Patricio County, Texas, set on the South Texas brush country plain where the Nueces River was dammed to create Lake Corpus Christi. The community grew up around the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad, which laid track across the county in 1887. Landowner Thomas H. Mathis donated acreage for a townsite and school in exchange for naming rights, giving the settlement its name; his family's cattle and land holdings dominated the surrounding country in the town's early years. Cotton, corn and ranching sustained the early economy, residents of the older community of Lagarto relocated to be near the rail line, and Mathis incorporated in 1939. The city's character changed with the river. During the 1930s the Nueces was dammed to form Lake Mathis, later renamed Lake Corpus Christi, and a second dam, Wesley Seale Dam, built in the late 1950s, raised the lake to its present extent. The 21,000-acre reservoir turned Mathis into a recreation gateway, drawing weekend boaters, anglers and a sizable seasonal population of winter visitors who settle along the lake's more than 200 miles of shoreline. Agriculture adapted around it: irrigation supported vegetable crops in the mid-20th century, and cotton and grain sorghum continue to be grown in the surrounding fields. Today Mathis has a population of about 4,300 and is a heavily Hispanic community with deep roots in South Texas ranching and farming. Its modest grid of homes and storefronts sits a short distance from Lake Corpus Christi State Park, while Interstate 37 places both San Antonio and Corpus Christi within a manageable drive. The city's identity rests on the lake, the schools and the agricultural rhythms of the county, giving it a quiet, unhurried character distinct from the busier cities of the Coastal Bend.

City Guide

About Mathis

Real Estate & Housing

Mathis offers a small-town housing stock centered on a compact grid of single-family homes, many built in the mid-20th century, with ranch-style and frame construction common. Around the lake, the pattern shifts toward weekend homes, recreational-vehicle sites, mobile homes and lake-oriented lots that cater to boaters and winter visitors rather than year-round commuters. The city's modest scale means most residences sit within a few minutes of the school, the commercial center and the water, and buyers tend to find more land and more house for their money than in the larger Coastal Bend cities. Newer construction is limited, so the market leans toward established homes and lakeside recreational properties.

Neighborhoods

Mathis is compact enough that it is better understood by function than by formal subdivision names. The central town holds the older residential grid, the schools and the commercial streets near the original railroad townsite. To the northwest, the Lake Corpus Christi shoreline is lined with camps, parks, boat ramps and weekend-home areas that extend well beyond the city limits, giving the area a dispersed, lake-oriented fringe. Lake Corpus Christi State Park occupies a cove protected by limestone cliffs a short drive from town, and the surrounding countryside transitions into farmland and brush used for cattle grazing, reinforcing the community's rural setting.

Lifestyle in Mathis

Daily life in Mathis revolves around the lake and the town's close-knit, agricultural character. Fishing is the signature pastime; Lake Corpus Christi is known for catfish as well as largemouth and white bass, crappie and sunfish. Boating, water skiing, swimming and birdwatching fill weekends, and the area hosts a sizable population of seasonal winter visitors drawn by the mild climate. The pace is quiet and unhurried, with local schools and community events at the center of civic life. For shopping, dining and urban amenities, residents travel to Corpus Christi or Beeville, keeping Mathis a distinctly small-town, water-oriented place to live.

Schools & Education

The City of Mathis is served by Mathis Independent School District, whose campuses include Mathis Elementary School, Mathis Intermediate, Mathis Middle School and Mathis High School, along with a high school program for international studies. The district anchors the community's education and extracurricular life. Del Mar College, headquartered in Corpus Christi, is the designated community college for all of San Patricio County, providing access to two-year degrees and workforce training. For four-year universities, residents look to Corpus Christi, San Antonio and the broader South Texas region.

Getting Around

Mathis sits on Farm Road 359 alongside Interstate 37 in western San Patricio County, giving the town direct highway access to two of South Texas's principal cities: Corpus Christi lies roughly 40 miles to the southeast, and San Antonio about 90 miles to the northwest. I-37 is the main route in and out of the area, and local farm roads tie Mathis to the lake shoreline, the state park and surrounding ranches. The historic San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad first put the town on the map, and while rail service has since receded from daily life, the highway network now carries the commuter and visitor traffic that sustains the community.

Parks & Recreation

Lake Corpus Christi dominates recreation in Mathis. The 21,000-acre reservoir offers swimming, boating, water skiing and fishing, with a reputation for excellent catfish alongside bass, crappie and sunfish. Lake Corpus Christi State Park preserves about 350 acres around a sheltered cove, with campsites, boat ramps, fishing piers, hiking and birdwatching. The park's setting below high limestone cliffs gives it a scenic quality unusual for the brush country, and its mild climate supports year-round use. The lake's long shoreline is dotted with additional camps, marinas and recreation areas, making the Mathis area a long-standing destination for both weekend boaters and winter residents.
